Description
Craving comforting cabbage rolls without the fuss? Our Slow Cooker Unstuffed Cabbage Rolls deliver rich beef, tender cabbage, and rice in a savory tomato sauce. Easy, hearty, and full of flavor.
Ingredients
Scale
- 1.5 pounds lean ground beef
- 1 medium head green cabbage, cored and roughly chopped
- 1/2 cup uncooked white rice, rinsed
- 1 (28 ounce) can crushed tomatoes
- 1 (15 ounce) can tomato sauce
- 1 medium onion, chopped
- 3 cloves garlic, minced
- 1 cup beef broth
Instructions
- Step 1: In a large skillet, brown the ground beef over medium-high heat, breaking it apart as it cooks. Drain off any excess grease. Add the chopped onion and minced garlic to the skillet with the beef and cook for 5-7 minutes until the onion is softened.
- Step 2: Transfer the beef mixture to a large bowl. Add the rinsed uncooked rice, half of the crushed tomatoes, half of the tomato sauce, 1 teaspoon salt, and 1/2 teaspoon black pepper. Mix thoroughly to combine all ingredients.
- Step 3: Place half of the chopped cabbage in the bottom of your slow cooker. Spread the entire beef and rice mixture evenly over the cabbage layer. Top with the remaining chopped cabbage.
- Step 4: Pour the remaining crushed tomatoes, tomato sauce, and the beef broth over the cabbage layers in the slow cooker. Do not stir.
- Step 5: Cover and cook on low for 6-8 hours, or on high for 3-4 hours, until the cabbage is tender and the rice is cooked through. Stir gently before serving.
Notes
- Store any delicious leftovers in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 3-4 days, or freeze individual portions for convenient, ready-made meals.
- Gently reheat servings in the microwave or a saucepan over low heat, adding a splash of beef broth or water if needed to maintain moisture, until piping hot throughout.
- This hearty meal is wonderful served simply on its own, but you can elevate it with a side of mashed potatoes or some warm, crusty bread to soak up every drop of the savory sauce.
- For an extra layer of authentic flavor, consider stirring a tablespoon of brown sugar or a splash of apple cider vinegar into the tomato sauce mixture before slow cooking to enhance that classic sweet and tangy note.
